Today at noon ET, the U.S. Mint will officially release the 2024-S Reverse Proof Morgan and Peace Dollar Set, expected to attract significant attention from collectors due to its unique reverse proof finish and homage to two iconic American coins.
This set includes both the 2024-S Reverse Proof Morgan Silver Dollar and the 2024-S Reverse Proof Peace Dollar, each crafted from 0.859 ounces of 99.9% silver at the U.S. Mint’s San Francisco facility. These coins are part of the Mint’s ongoing Morgan and Peace Dollar series, which was reintroduced in 2021.
The Mint highlights the historical significance of these coins: the Morgan Dollar, created by Chief Engraver George T. Morgan, reflects the nation’s industrial growth and westward expansion in the late 19th century, while the Peace Dollar symbolizes America’s emergence as a global power post-World War I.
The original Morgan Silver Dollar was produced from 1878 to 1904 and briefly again in 1921. The Peace Dollar, designed by Italian-American artist Anthony de Francisci, replaced the Morgan Dollar and was minted from 1921 to 1935, with a gap from 1929 to 1933.
In 1921, five unique uncirculated Morgan Dollars were struck to honor the coin’s legacy, each featuring different mint marks: ‘CC’ for the Carson City Mint, ‘O’ for the New Orleans Mint, and unmarked coins struck in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver. That year also saw the Philadelphia Mint produce a single uncirculated Peace Dollar.
After a hiatus in 2022 due to a shortage of silver blanks, the U.S. Mint resumed production of the Morgan and Peace Dollar series in 2023, releasing a variety of coins, including uncirculated and proof versions, as well as reverse proof sets like the one being released today.
Coin Designs
For the updated versions of these classic coins, the U.S. Mint has combined historical elements with modern technology. On the 2024-S Morgan Dollar, the obverse showcases Liberty in profile, with her crown adorned with “LIBERTY” and surrounded by 13 stars, as well as “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “2024.” The reverse features an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, framed by a wreath with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
The Peace Dollar’s obverse depicts Liberty in profile with a radiant crown, inscribed with “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2024.” On the reverse, an eagle holds an olive branch, with the word “PEACE” prominently displayed, along with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
